Spencer Pryor, a spokesperson with the North Charleston Police Department, said police have used a statement from the shooter, or subject, and video evidence to make the determination.
The incident began with a verbal altercation at Willie’s Bar, located at 7880 Dorchester Road.
The victim approached the subject and pulled a gun on him, prompting the subject to leave the bar – going to his vehicle in an effort to avoid further confrontation, according to Pryor.
Pryor stated that once the subject entered his vehicle, the victim, a 29-year-old male, and another unknown person approached the driver’s side of the subject’s car and the victim again showed his weapon and began to pull it.
According to Pryor, the subject was “fearing for his life” when he pulled out his own handgun and fired several rounds at the victim, striking him.
Police arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. The subject was taken into custody and the victim was sent to the hospital, according to Pryor.
Police said based on the evidence, they believe the man acted in self defense and did not file charges, however the incident is still under investigation.
