Project ChildSafe Kicks off Their S.A.F.E. Summer Program

Are you and your family having a safe summer?

S.A.F.E. Summer is an extension of NSSF’s Project ChildSafe campaign. In line with Project ChildSafe’s message of “Own It? Respect It. Secure It,” the S.A.F.E. Summer effort is a reminder that proper firearm storage is the #1 way to help prevent firearm accidents, theft and misuse.

“S.A.F.E.” stands for:
Store your firearms responsibly when not in use
     Always practice firearm safety
Focus on your responsibilities as a firearm owner
Education is key to preventing accidents.

The effort is focused on providing resources to help gun owners take actions and share information that will help keep their families and communities safer.

“Nearly all firearm accidents in the home can be prevented when gun owners take simple precautions, and proper storage is the number one way to help prevent accidents” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. “Anyone who is going to own a firearm should respect it and secure it when not in use to help prevent firearm accidents and misuse.”

The NSSF is also honoring Local Champions of Safety, like the Oakland County Board of Commissioners:

Following its Third Annual Free Gun Safety Lock Giveaway Day, The Oakland County Board of Commissioners (The BOC) was recognized for its efforts to address gun safety and gun violence in the aftermath of the community’s Sandy Hook tragedy.

“Our goal is to continue to create various outreach efforts from developing public service announcements to holding our annual free gun lock giveaway. We want to encourage gun owners to be responsible as well as help to protect our children and our community by locking up and properly storing firearms. It is important that the conversation about gun safety and education continues,” says Julia Ruffin, Senior Oakland County Board of Commissioners Liaison and representative of the Public Services Committee’s Study Group on Gun Violence. “We want to encourage and ensure that the conversation about gun safety is ongoing.”
