Home Intruder Shot After Attempting to Rob Off-Duty Deputy's Home

A Darwin Award winning home intruder picked the wrong house to break into Wednesday morning.

Authorities say the man was attempting to break into a home near Buena Vista Avenue and Chestnut Street in Alameda, CA at approximately 11:00 a.m. as the homeowner, an off-duty Contra Costa Sheriff’s Deputy, was sleeping. When the sound from the home intrusion woke the deputy, he armed himself and fired several shots at the intruder.

It’s not clear whether the intruder was shot inside or outside the house, but he ended up collapsing in the driveway.

“I heard a series of gunshots and then there was a pause and more gunshots and yelling,” a neighbor told a local news station.

“There was an African American male who was on the ground and they did first aid on him and took him away,” witness Gabriel Quintanilla said.

“He wasn’t moving at all. Next thing we knew they were taking him away in an ambulance,” neighbor David Hoie said.

Police responded to the scene immediately and a SWAT team was sent out to sweep the neighborhood for additional suspects. None were found.

Authorities have not released the name of the deceased suspect nor are police identifying the off-duty officer involved in the incident.
