Everything is Bigger in Texas, Including a Chain of Female-Run Gun Ranges

The exterior of the Shoot Smart Indoor Gun Range in north Fort Worth is much like other ranges but inside, WFAA found a welcome departure from the norm.

With two locations under her belt already, CEO Roxanne Laney’s gun ranges are so successful, she’s gearing up to open a third location and gunning for the title of largest gun range chain in Texas.

“I think the way to get women to come to your range is to have women behind the counter,” Laney said.
Shoot Smart, consistently named the #1 gun range in Fort Worth, has the latest and greatest lane technologies and provides one of the finest shooting experiences in the industry.
One of those experiences is not only the fact that it’s one of only a handful of female-run ranges, but that several of Laney’s leaders are also female as well.
“You kind of have to break through that mystique that it’s all male-driven, men doing this kind of thing,” said Stacey Mitry, training manager at the Fort Worth location. Mitry is also a former FBI sniper and one of Laney’s top leaders.
Although Laney says roughly 60% of the customers at the Fort Worth location are men, she and her staff work to make every demographic comfortable at their ranges.

“Shooting is kind of an old white guy’s sport, for a long time, and that’s changing around the country, not just here,” Laney said. “We do have the atmosphere where two ladies can get out of car, come in here, and not even think twice about it.”
