Shortly after President Obama called on Congress to quickly pass new “common sense” gun control measures Wednesday at the White House, a group of GOP Senators swiftly reminded him a vote on the any new gun control legislation will be blocked through a filibuster. More from the Washington Examiner:

“The proposals the president is calling for Congress to pass would primarily serve to reduce the constitutionally protected rights of law-abiding citizens while having little or no effect on violent crime,” Lee said in a statement. “It is deeply unfortunate that he continues to use the tragedy at Newtown as a backdrop for pushing legislation that would have done nothing to prevent that horrible crime.”

Lee repeated his promise to filibuster the bill together with Sens. Rand Paul R-Ky. and Ted Cruz R-Texas reminding Americans that it was important to have a full Senate debate on the issue.

“The Senate — and the American people — have an important debate ahead of us,” Lee concluded. “I look forward to this debate and hope that others Senators join me, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz in demanding that our discussions take place in full view of the American people.”

The list of Senators planning to filibuster new gun control measures has grown from Sens. Mike Lee, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz to include Marco Rubio and Jim Inhofe.
