Manchin: The Gun Control Fight Isn't Over

Sen. Manchin isn’t giving up on gun control just yet.  On ‘Fox News Sunday,’ Manchin was hopeful that the Senate could take up another gun control bill—this time focusing narrowly on mental health and criminal background checks.

“The only thing we’ve asked for is for people to read the bill,” the West Virginia Democrat said on “Fox News Sunday,” stressing the need for a “clean bill.”

“I truly believe that if we have time to sell the bill… read the bill and tell me what you don’t like,” he said.

And what about Sen. Toomey’s involvement in future gun control efforts? Despite saying he’s ready to move on to other issues, Manchin doesn’t think the Pennsylvania senator is done just yet—his record-high job approval rating since his sponsorship of the expanded background check bill may have something to do with that.

But will a renewed attempt at gun-control go anywhere this time around? Probably not. With other political battles like immigration reform on the horizon, “there’s only so much Obama and Democratic leaders can fight for on Capitol Hill,” the Washington Post reports. “Pressing for something that was just rejected isn’t the best way to shore up one’s political standing ahead of high-stakes battles on other issues.”
