Democratic Senator to Anti-Gun Mayor Bloomberg: Leave North Dakota Alone

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest anti-gun campaign targets North Dakota, among many other states, and Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp isn’t happy about it. The reason? North Dakota has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country and the lowest gun crime rate in the nation, according to the Williston Herald.

“As the former attorney general of North Dakota, I do not need someone from New York City to tell me how to handle crime in our state,” Heitkamp said. “I know that we can go after and prosecute criminals without the need to infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of law abiding North Dakotans.”

Heitkamp added she wouldn’t expect Bloomberg to listen to her advice about running a major city on the East Coast and she doesn’t plan to follow his advice.

In her statement, she continued to support keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill but not out of the hands of the everyday person in a state where the culture and way of life supports gun use.

“We are proud of our outdoor heritage and will continue to protect the rights our hunters and sport shooters, the rights of our farmers and ranchers to protect their crops and livestock from wildlife and the rights of responsible, law abiding citizens to protect themselves and their homes,” Heitkamp added.
