Vietnam Navy Video: 'Men with Green Faces'

This 1969 Navy film “Men with Green Faces” shows SEAL teams in the jungles and rivers of Vietnam. In addition to scenes from the bush, there are remarkable scenes from SEAL training and audio commentary from actual SEALs. The film opens with a team navigating down a river in full face paint as the narrator explains that the SEALs were upon until “recently” a DOD secret.

“SEALs are specialists are being where they are least expected,” the narrator explains.

The teams were drawn from the Navy frogmen community and created by order of President John F. Kennedy, he said.

In a time when wars have become distant and impersonal, Kennedy realized that it would take special operations to win special kinds of wars, he said. “SEALs fight in the midst of the enemy.”
