I had called my kids regularly since I deployed, so the conversation continued normally until Katie asked, “Hey, how are you calling me from Kelley’s phone?”
A split-second later she realized what had happened and started scream-crying, which started my own gushers.
Terrible things happen during military training and, of course, during overseas deployments. In my experience, the chance that I could have been killed was understood, but never spoken.
