Air Shows

Thunder on the Lakeshore ( Manitowoc, Wisconsin; June 2-3):

Editor’s note: The Manitowoc County Airport will host an air show that will feature many modern and historic aircraft. It will include an appearance by a WWII P-38 Lightning, a modern F-18 Hornet and the Tuskegee Airmen exhibit.

The 2012 Cherry Point Air Show (Cherry Point Air Station, North Carolina; May 4-6):

Editors Note: A massive air show in North Carolina that celebrates the Cherry Point Air Station’s 70th anniversary. It will feature many historic aircraft, including the Curtis Helldiver from WWII, and will host the Blue Angels. The historic aircraft featured will be of both military and civilian origin.

Civil War

2012: Invasion by Rail and River (Pickwick Landing State Park, Tennessee; April 4-5):

Editor’s note: The 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, which began in 2010, has been taking place across the country. Tennessee, a border state, which was the location of some of the war’s most famous battles, is hosting all kinds of event to pay tribute to that great conflict. The massive re-enactment of the Battle of Shiloh will leave the area as anything but a “place of peace” as there are likely to be many Civil war enthusiasts who linger in the area afterward. 

Many more activities are being planned for the next few weeks. The Tennessee Sesquicentennial Commission will be hosting an event at Pickwick Landing State Park, Pickwick Dam, Tennessee, which is called “2012: Invasion by and River.” The event will include an appearance by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslem and will go on for two days. There will be many lectures by Civil War historians and new film previews, as well as many opportunities to buy memorabilia.

Learn About the Civil War Balloon Corps (Alexandria, Virginia; April 28):

Editor’s note: Fort Ward Museum in Alexandria, Va. is hosting a living history event on April 28 that celebrates the Balloon Corps. of the American Civil War. While establishing air superiority was not yet considered an integral part of military strategy in the mid-19th century, the observation balloons were helpful in observing enemy positions.

Arlington

Easter Sunrise Service at Arlington National Cemetery (Arlington, Virginia; April 8):

Editor’s note:The U.S. Army Military District of Washington Command Chaplain will host the Easter Sunrise Service in Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater on April 8 at 6:30 a.m. The dramatic event will have thousands of attendees from across the country and the seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
