Romney is good for guns, guns owners

Mitt Romney

Republican nominee hopeful, Mitt Romney, may very well be the next President of the United States. If so, gun rights advocates can relax a sigh of relief.

We have examined the current administration’s record on guns, and found that vocally President Obama is supportive of Second Amendment rights; but inherently he is diligently working with the Justice Department and other anti firearm groups to institute gun control measures, by any means, with or without Congress and the People.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, has taken a firm, pro-gun rights position, and unlike the President, has a record to prove it.

“The Second Amendment protects the individual right of lawful citizens to keep and bear arms. I strongly support this essential freedom and I applaud the recent federal appeals court decision in Washington, D.C., which concluded that the Second Amendment protects an individualized right to keep and bear arms. As President, I will support that interpretation and protect the right of every law abiding American to keep and use firearms. With respect to gun control laws, I believe we need to distinguish between law abiding gun owners and criminals who use guns. Those who use a firearm during the commission of a crime must be punished severely. The key is to provide law enforcement with the resources they need and punish criminals, not burden lawful gun owners.” (Campaign 2008)

As governor of Massachusetts from 2002 to 2006, Romney fought for reform of the most oppressive gun control laws in the nation that:

a.      Banned assault weapons indefinitely, including 700 firearms that are not classified as assault            weapons;
b.      Provided weak protections for shooting clubs;
c.       Burdensome licensing restrictions; and
d.      Strict manufacturing testing for certain pistols.

Romney would successfully negotiate and reform laws that furnished the endorsement of NRA’s Gun Owners Action League and law enforcement officials; an achievement that local media characterized as a “net gain” for gun owners.

Critics who complain Romney changes his positions with the wind, base their assertions by taking a line from a speech given a gazillion years ago – matching it to something Romney said two seconds ago – and bingo we have a flip flopper.

Yet outdated and out of context statements – amplified – does not amount to a position, a record does.

And at the end of the day, big government and a “share the wealth” mentality have caused such a weakened economy, a credit rating downgrade, and welfare rolls to double up with clients, that Americans are hopeless, without work, out of money, and they blame President Obama.

Looking for a leader with strong business skills, and the know-how to get the economy moving, the people see Mitt Romney as the “one.”

Republican critics, no doubt, will coalesce behind their nominee at the GOP convention in Tampa this August.
