President Donald Trump spoke minutes ago from the Diplomatic Room of the White House regarding the tragedy in Las Vegas when a 64-year-old man opened fire on an outdoor concert. At least 50 people were killed and over 400 were wounded.

He opened his brief remarks by saying, “We are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief.”

Trump referred to the attack as “an act of pure evil.” He then added that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were on the scene and working with local law enforcement to get to the bottom of this senseless tragedy.

The president went on to thank the first responders who acted so quickly, noting that their actions were remarkable in finding the shooter as quickly as they did and reacting to stop the deadly attack.

President Trump then turned his attention to the victims of the attack. Regarding those who lost loved ones, he said, “We cannot fathom their pain.” He added, “To the wounded who are now recovering in hospitals, we are praying for your full and speedy recovery”

Also mentioned was that President Trump has ordered all flags to half mast. The president’s order:

Our Nation is heartbroken.  We mourn with all whose loved ones were murdered and injured in last night’s horrible tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada.  As we grieve, we pray that God may provide comfort and relief to all those suffering.

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless act of violence perpetrated on October 1, 2017, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, October 6, 2017.  I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand seventeen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

President Trump also announced he would be traveling to Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with local officials.

However, the president faces a starkly divided nation. He expressed his hope that, like it times past, this tragedy would unite all Americans. “In times of tragedy and horror, America comes together as one.” The president added, “We call on the bonds of citizenship.”

As if echoing what many Americans are thinking, “In times such as these, I know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the chaos.” He continued, “The answers do not come easy.”

Also sounding what many are feeling, he added, “We pray for the day when evil is banished and the innocent are safe from hatred and fear.”

Most Americans are undoubtedly echoing that sentiment today.
