Breaking: Bomb Explodes Near Times Square

Just weeks after the Halloween truck attack in New York City, the city finds itself the focus of what looks like it may well be another terrorist attack following an explosion near famed Times Square, a major tourist spot in the city.

One person is in custody after an explosion near New York City’s Port Authority bus terminal during Monday morning’s rush hour, prompting mass chaos and halting multiple subway lines, NYPD said.

Several people were reportedly injured. An NYPD source on the scene told Fox News a device went off and there was a person strapped with a bomb.

President Trump has been briefed on the incident, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a tweet.

NYPD and the FDNY confirmed to Fox News they were investigating reports of an explosion “of an unknown origin” near 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. Police tweeted A, C, E subways lines are being evacuated.

Fox News is reporting at this moment that it was a bomb found on a subway platform.

They’re also reporting that people throughout the city are effectively locked down and unable to move about the city and there is reportedly only a single injury, thankfully.

A tweet with a really poor quality video of the explosion:

It also appears that the bomber is in custody and will be questioned by police.

Now, please bear in mind that the situation is very confused right now. We’re going to get a lot of information and some will conflict with earlier information, which will add to the confusion, so it’s important to take every bit of news with a grain of salt.

Early speculation is that it’s Islamic terrorism and as more information comes out, we’ll see if that pans out, though I consider it very likely. Fox News reports that the suspect has been in the United States for seven years and was a resident of the Bronx.

It also appears that the suspect had the bomb strapped to him in some way, though that raises the question of how he survived if that was the case. Again, questions that may well be answered later, though some speculation is that it may have dropped.

Nearby subway lines are being or have been evacuated.

ABC News is quoting anonymous sources who claim the device is a pipe bomb.

Emergency personnel responded during morning rush hour to the Port Authority bus terminal in New York City to investigate reports of an “explosion,” which police sources said was possibly caused by a pipe bomb.

The sources said the pipe bomb was possibly detonated in a passageway below ground at Port Authority, a major transportation hub where buses and trains operate from the west side of Midtown Manhattan.

Again, this is early information and is subject to change.

That said, this is the second attack in New York City is just over a month. The fear is, undoubtedly, that this is some kind of an escalation in terrorist activity in the United States following massive setbacks of ISIS in the Middle East. As they lose ground in Syria, they may begin increasing attacks here in the U.S. as some kind of Hail Mary play.

We will continue to monitor the situation.
