Speer makes some damn good ammo. Gold Dots fill a lot of magazines and have a lot of lives trusted to it. That makes sense because it’s quality ammo with a track record of reliability.

Now, they’re getting a nice contract from the Department of Homeland Security on top of everything else.

Speer announced on Tuesday that the Immigration Customs Enforcement arm of the Department of Homeland Security awarded the company a potentially huge contract for 9mm ammunition.

The contract, for as much as 120 million rounds of 124-grain, 9mm Luger Gold Dot Duty ammunition, will make the round available to a number of agencies inside Homeland Security in addition to ICE over the next five years. Besides the immigration service, DHS encompasses the Air Marshal Service, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the Secret Service, among others.

“Speer Gold Dot has a long history of providing trusted performance time and time again for our nation’s law enforcement and military,” said Jason Nash, product director. “We’re very proud to provide Gold Dot to the DHS for their duty ammunition needs.”

Let’s be clear, 120 million rounds is nothing to sneeze at.

It’s not as good as something like a DOD contract, but it’s not like expanding ammo will ever really get that treatment.

Still, its good to see a company that makes a quality product get a nice contract. Then again, I’m biased since this round is exactly what I carry, so take that with a grain of salt.

However, the track record for Gold Dot is well established. That means DHS officers aren’t likely to be let down by their ammo. It’ll also provide a nice economic boost for the company. Since we keep hearing that companies are in a tough spot, this can’t be anything but good news for Speer.

Some will undoubtedly look at this purchase and flench, though. After all, big purchases of ammunition tend to terrify people, especially those who oppose the sitting president. There’s no reason to believe this case will be any different.

If this happens, the results will be hilarious because those people aren’t gun folks and won’t be able to comprehend the subject we’re talking about.

To be preemptive, this is a nice size purchase, but it’s not massive. With a little under a quarter of a million employees, this purchase is something like 500 rounds per employee. Granted, not all employees of DHS carry firearms, but as most gun people know, 500 rounds isn’t a huge amount of ammo for anyone who needs to shoot regularly for practice, qualification, and professionally.

Not that it’ll stop the paranoid, mind you. They’ll still kvetch about how this is some proof that Trump intends to impose martial law, despite no other supporting evidence besides the voices in their own head.

For Speer, though, I offer my congrats. May they continue to thrive and remember that someone out there is innovating right now, so don’t fall asleep at the helm. Someone else wants that next contract.
