Parkland Students And 'Gun Violence Awareness'

While David Hogg and his merry band of misfits are traveling the country lecturing people on how a group of high school kids and recent high school graduates know far more than any of us who actually understand firearms and have studied the Constitution, some of his former classmates are reaching out for their share of fame. It seems that they want to make people “aware” that violence happens and stuff.

Survivors of one of the deadliest school shootings in the country were in Southwest Florida Monday, pushing for an end to gun violence. Ten students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland – where 14 students and three adults were killed by a gunman in February – spread their message of demanding more gun control legislation at a press conference at the Best Western Inn in Naples.

“This is about gun violence,” said Stoneman Douglas student Delaney Tarr. “This is an epidemic across the country, but the core of this is our passion. It is our grief, it is our loss.”

The students later took part in a voter registration drive at Silverspot Cinema in North Naples.

“No matter what party, no matter what policy, you need to be educated,” Tarr said. “You need to care about it and you need to vote on it.”

We need to be educated by a 17-year-old girl who has little actual knowledge or experience save for going to a particular high school that had one horrific event take place.

How about no?

However, Tarr is following David Hogg’s playbook of trying to pretend that this isn’t a partisan issue and that somehow, both sides will coalesce around the Parkland crowd’s desire to infringe in our sacred and protected right to keep and bear arms. The thing is, it’s not a partisan issue, but not in the way they’d like.

A number of people on the left have, through the years, looked at the issue and concluded that guns aren’t the problem. There’s a reason for that. They’re not. They never have been.

In Parkland, the problem was the school and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office continued to fail in dealing with the killer long before he was a killer. They could have acted sooner, made arrests earlier, and then he wouldn’t have been able to buy his firearm. But they didn’t. They looked the other way, treating that maniac like he was just some poor, misunderstood soul who needed a break, dozens of them.

But Tarr and her ilk instead want to blame the NRA. The same NRA that they claim wants to put a gun in every hand yet hasn’t made any effort to arm domestic abusers–which the Parkland killer should have been legally classified as. In other words, the law that should have kept him disarmed was one the NRA hasn’t tried to stop.

It’s still totally their fault though, right?

Look, it’s not really about guns. It never was. As horrific as Parkland was, some of these vocal kids have never so much as laid eyes on the actual event. They were in different buildings and never saw any of it.

No, it’s about attention. It’s about taking their juvenile political ambitions and capitalizing on the opportunity. Nothing more, nothing less.
