Anti-gunners are desperate for a win. While they had momentum in the wake of Parkland, that has since slowed down and fizzled out. Same as it does after every other mass shooting. People get upset, think with their heart and not their heads, and want all sorts of things, then settle down and realize that none of that stuff will work.

But die-hard anti-gunners keep going and keep looking for momentum and take whatever wins they can get.

For example, here in Georgia, we had a runoff election yesterday to settle on nominees. One nominee, in particular, has some on the anti-gun side excited.

In a major win for gun control activists, Lucy McBath has won Georgia’s Democratic House primary for the 6th Congressional District in a close race against businessman Kevin Abel. Now, McBath will take on Republican Representative Karen Handel, elected in 2017, in November’s general election.

The gun reform activist came out on top Tuesday, collecting more than 36 percent of the vote in the four-way Democratic race. McBath, a two-time breast cancer survivor, has made gun control one of the key platforms of her campaign, following her child’s death after he was shot in 2012. Her 17-year-old son, Jordan Davis, was killed in his car while with a group of friends at a Florida gas station by a 47-year-old white man who complained about his loud music.

McBath’s run for Congress has drawn high-profile attention and support from across the country. Everytown for Gun Safety has dropped more than $1 million to boost McBath’s campaign. Listed among her supporters are some heavy Democratic hitters: She has been endorsed by Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) and Hillary Clinton, for whom McBath campaigned in 2016, according to The Washington Post. McBath wrote on her campaign site that she also spent time as a surrogate for Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016, speaking to the Democratic National Convention as one of the “Mothers of The Movement,” a group of women whose African-American children have been killed by the police or by gun violence. Emily’s List also supports McBath.

Of course, the article fails to mention just who she’s going up against in Karen Handel.

Handel is a long-time fixture of Georgia politics who won her seat by going toe-to-toe with Democratic Party golden boy John Ossoff. Ossoff dominated a jungle primary of a special election in 2017 but failed to reach the 50 percent mark. That meant that despite snagging 48.1 percent of the vote, he still had to run against Handel who had garnered just 19.8 percent.

Ossoff had massive party backing and outside help as his party felt it was a golden opportunity to steal a House seat from the Republicans. They felt that since Trump had only narrowly taken the district, they had a chance.

Handel then came out swinging with help from President Trump and won with more than 51 percent of the vote.

Now, she has the power of incumbency, a playing field that means the party can’t throw nearly as much weight behind McBath as they did Ossoff, and a track record in Congress.

I’m not saying Handel’s a shoe-in, but anti-gunners are really counting their chickens before they hatch on this one. McBath is likely to get her butt kicked in November, and if this is the big win anti-gunners have been hoping for, we on the pro-gun side can rest nice and easy going forward.
