Representative Lucy McBath (D-Georgia) was elected primarily on a gun control platform. Her entire campaign revolved around her anti-gun activism, an effort that began after a man with a gun killed her son. She made it a focal point of her message and was able to unseat Republican incumbent Karen Handel.

Now, she’s a member of the United States House of Representatives, but guess what?

It seems she doesn’t have time to serve her constituents.

A letter obtained by InsiderAdvantage to a constituent of newly-elected U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Ga., admits her office is unable to fulfill routine constituent requests. It recommends a constituent’s request for help be shifted to the staff of U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.

The link includes a copy of the letter McBath sent to a constituent.

In it, she claims that since she took office on January 3, 2019, she’s received a high volume of correspondences and thanks them for their patience while her office develops their mail system.

InsiderAdvantage wonders why no staff was maintained to ease the transition, but I know the answer to that. Handel is a Republican, and so all of her staff was suspect. Thus, they needed to go.

A better question is why wasn’t any capable staff hired from other Democratic offices–either outgoing Democrats or those looking to move up in responsibility by leaving their current offices–so they could hit the ground running.

It seems McBath was so focused on gun control she forgot that taking office means having to do a lot more than pushing for legislation you want and blocking legislation you don’t. It means serving the needs of your constituents.

Instead, she refers them to Sen. Johnny Isakson’s office. A Republican, Isakson serves the entire state of Georgia, not just a small congressional district in the Atlanta area. Further, I’m going to guess that if people are reaching out to the Democratic representative over an issue, they’re not going to get the same response from a Republican Senator.

Let’s just call that a hunch.

The truth is that McBath was out of her depth from the start. She got a lot of push from the Democratic Party in a district that had turned far more purple than I thought it had. She had no real experience in public office, which means she had no clue how to hire staff or hit the ground running when she got there.

All she was focused on was pushing for the destruction of people’s constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

Oh, she mentioned other stuff in her campaign, but we knew where she came from and why she was running. The other issues were there because there was no way she could win by being a one-issue candidate. It just wasn’t going to happen.

Now that she’s in office, she’s shaping up to be everything I expected her to be — namely, a complete and total trainwreck. I sincerely hope her constituents remember this in a couple of years when it’s time to make another choice.
