Ever since Parkland a year ago, a lot of students have spoken out about how they no longer feel safe at school. They’ve pushed for gun control despite their poor understanding of just what happened and what causes these shootings. It’s unsurprising because they’re constantly bombarded with anti-gun propaganda day in, day out.

Now, Oregon is proposing some rather insane gun laws. Worse, some students are trying to pressure lawmakers into adopting those bills claiming that they need them to feel safe at school.

Around 40 students traveled to Salem from the Portland area Monday to say they want to feel safer in their classrooms. They’re lobbying for a new bill that would require a permit to buy guns and put other restrictions in place.

The measure, Oregon Senate Bill 501, would also require a criminal background check to buy ammunition and says you could only buy or receive 20 rounds within a 30-day period.

A co-owner of a gun store in Salem called the bill “ridiculous.”

The FBI says from 2001 to 2017 nearly 800 people died in active shooter incidents.

“I want to feel safe at school. I want to be able to live like a normal teenager,” Nabila, a Portland area high school student who lobbied lawmakers in Salem Monday, told KATU.

It’s time to do a little math.

The phrase “nearly 800” people isn’t specific, but let’s assume it’s 799 people killed in active shooter incidents during that 17-year timeframe.

By those numbers, we’re looking at 47 people killed in active shooter situations each year. Forty-seven.

It’s also worth noting that this includes workplace shooters, theater shooters, church shooters, and active shooters in any other venue besides school. This includes the Las Vegas shooting, for example, which not only skews the numbers upward all on its own but had nothing to do with schools.

That’s not to say those shootings aren’t significant. They’re still horrible tragedies. But, this matters because Nabila says she wants to feel safe at school.

If that’s the case, then she needs to start telling the media to stop pretending these school shootings are some epidemic. In Oregon alone, there were 400 auto fatalities in just 2017. Where is the fearmongering about cars and their inherent danger?

Note that car fatalities in just one year equal half the number of active shooter victims in a 17-year timespan.

The reason students like Nabila–and I’m not picking on her here–feel unsafe is that they’ve been told over and over again that they’re unsafe. The media has been hammering them with the idea that they’re unsafe. Schools have been hammering them with the idea that they’re unsafe. These are kids. They’re taught to listen to adults. And guess who is telling them they’re living with the Sword of Damocles hanging over their heads just because they’re at school.

That’s right — the supposed authorities.

Meanwhile, the people who are going to be impacted by Oregon’s nonsense aren’t going to be the kids who can’t buy a gun anyway. It’s not even going to be the criminals who will keep getting firearms and ammunition however they need to. It’s going to be the ordinary, everyday gun owners who pose no risk to anyone.
