While gun control isn’t a slam dunk everywhere, it’s something we all must be vigilant against. Even in anti-gun states, it’s imperative that we all dig in and fight. Anti-gun lawmakers should never forget that we’re out there and we’re not going to take whatever they want to dish out lying down.

Delaware is one of those states, though, that’s hard to classify as being either pro-gun or anti-gun. It’s very much in the middle, boasting both preemption and universal background checks. It’s a “may issue” state that, in reality, acts more like “shall issue.” It’s rather middle of the road.

However, a handful of bills are up for committee hearings that would seek to tilt them to the anti-gun side.

Senate Bill 68 seeks to ban the possession, purchase, manufacture, or sale of the most commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms in Delaware, with limited exceptions.  These firearms are popularly owned and used for self-defense, target shooting and hunting.  This legislation was also introduced last year at the behest of Governor Carney and relentlessly pushed by anti-gun legislators.

In other words, it’s an assault weapon ban. You’d think anti-gunners would have learned how well these work after the complete and total failure of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban, but nope. They’re still trying to push it.

It’s far from the only bill, either.

Senate Bill 70 would outright ban the possession, purchase, sale, and manufacture, of any magazine that can hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition.  Further, all currently covered magazines would need to be relinquished by June 30, 2020.

We’ve also seen them fail repeatedly. A prime example is the Thousand Oaks shooting in California where the shooter had a standard capacity magazine despite California state law banning them.

Because, again, criminals don’t follow the law.

Senate Bill 82 replaces the previously introduced gun control measure, Senate Bill 69.  Like SB 69, this bill would impose a requirement that individuals obtain training and a permit in order to purchase a firearm in Delaware.

It should be noted that no one is demanding that the state license people before they’re allowed to post their opinions on social media, read a holy book, or get together with friends.

It should also be noted that criminals routinely fail to get a license before purchasing a firearm, much less attend any mandatory training.

These bills need to be opposed, not just because Delaware residents shouldn’t be forced to go the way of California when it comes to their Second Amendment rights, but also because these bills do nothing to make anyone safer. If they did then maybe, just maybe, there would be a point to gun control, but there isn’t one.

At the end of the day, gun grabbers are going to grab guns, regardless of anything else and that’s all that’s happening in Delaware. It’s not concern over the crime rate or even a real concern that a mass shooting might occur. It’s a power grab by people who don’t respect constitutional rights.
