As if the shooting in Gilroy, California wasn’t enough to spoil your Monday, it turns out it wasn’t the only mass shooting over the weekend. On Saturday, a shooting took place at a community event in Brooklyn.

In that shooting, one person was killed, and another were 11 injured.

A shooting at a community event in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Saturday night left 1 man dead and 11 people injured according to law enforcement.

“It was chaos. … We were enjoying the evening and all of a sudden shots rang out. … Shots rang out and the crowd was already dispersing, and you heard about nine to 11 shots and everyone was running and scattering for cover,” vendor Gary Miller, 60, told The New York Post.

The shooters fired into the crowd at the annual two-day “Old Timers Day” festival even though roughly 100 cops were monitoring the event, according to The New York Post.

To make matters worse is the fact that unlike most mass shootings we hear about, this one doesn’t have a dead suspect or one in custody.

No, the shooter or shooters are still at large.

NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill said the police do not have any suspects or knowledge of what led to the gunfire, reported The Associated Press.

However, the firearm was found abandoned hours after the shooting. While it wasn’t identified, the fact that the shooter attempted to dispose of it and the number of shots fired suggests that it was probably a semi-automatic handgun rather than a rifle, but I’m not going to rule anything out.

So over the weekend, we had two shootings in two vehemently anti-gun states. Brooklyn falls under the draconian gun control laws of New York City. That won’t stop Mayor Bill de Blasio for wanting still more of what didn’t work, though.

Of course, New York City is notorious for its strict gun control laws. It’s incredibly difficult to legally purchase a firearm, much less be allowed to carry one.

Yet this gunman had a gun and brazenly opened fire at a public event where a large number of police officers were present. Just as with Gilroy, it seems that every reasonable step those in power could take to keep the public safe were taken, and yet someone still managed to commit a mass shooting despite it all.

Couple that with the already strict gun control and it becomes even more clear that laws and “gun-free zones” aren’t going to be enough to stop mass shootings. This was yet another case of guns being unwelcome, and yet the shooter didn’t give a damn.

All that said, it’s also important to note that this may not be a typical mass shooting. This may as well have been gang-related, or a personal vendetta against someone and the 11 people who were wounded are just collateral damage.

Now, I’m not saying that’s what happened here, only that it’s possible. We’ll have to wait for more information.
