Biden Calls For 'Real Reform' On Gun Laws, Ignores His Own History

Former Vice President Joe Biden is one of the legions of Democrats currently running for president. As such, he was one of the many who were asked about their thoughts regarding the tragedy in Gilroy, California.

The 2020 election Democratic field on Sunday responded to the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting that killed at least four, including the gunman, and injured 15, saying the incident is a horrible reminder of the country’s “gun violence epidemic.”

“This violence is not normal,” Joe Biden, the former vice president, tweeted. “How many more families will have to lose a loved one before we fix our broken gun laws? We must take action, starting with real reform.”

Yeah. I mean, it’s got to be rough for Biden. After all, it’s not like he was part of the executive branch, working with a similarly inclined president that at one point had control over both the House and the Senate.

I mean, if that had happened, they might have passed some of that gun control they believe is oh-so-necessary these days.

Oh, wait, that’s precisely what happened. Yet, they didn’t do anything more than kvetch about people clinging “bitterly” to “guns and religion.”

Of course, I’m not complaining. Gun control wouldn’t really have changed anything that happened in Gilroy, contrary to what anti-gunners are screaming now.

However, I have to take issue with the hypocrisy coming from Biden, a man who was uniquely placed to make this push not just as vice president, but also during his time in the Senate. Sure, he backed the assault weapon ban–a bill that accomplished absolutely nothing, it should be noted–but otherwise did remarkably little during his tenure.

It’s like suddenly, these gun laws are a problem and Biden needs to ride to the rescue or something.

Now, in fairness to Biden, there wasn’t action on gun control in the past because there was little reason for it. The assault weapon ban didn’t do anything. Violent crime rates were dropping. Things were going great. Why upset the apple cart?

The problem is that now he’s pretending like he never could have done a thing before and he needs to be elected president in order to “fix” things.

That’s disingenuous to an extreme.

He didn’t push before because it wasn’t a problem. The truth is, guns aren’t a problem now. No, something else is at work and it’s not guns or the lack of gun control. We don’t know what, though.

We don’t know what the problem is because politics won’t let us look at it. Democrats in Congress and in state legislatures have been focused on gun control for well over a year now. They won’t tolerate discussion of literally any other solutions to the perceived problem of mass shootings. Seriously, look at their comments on hardening schools for evidence of this.

Biden is just playing politics by acting like guns are a problem now, when they weren’t when he was vice president and Democrats held Congress. He’s just hoping you’ll forget about all that.
