Babies are only babies for a short time. As a result, you can often get almost brand new stuff, if not brand new, on the second-hand market. As a result, it’s not unusual for people to make a run for the local Goodwill when they need a baby shower gift.

However, a Florida gift turned out to be a little different than what they expected.

A Florida couple shopping for a baby shower gift thought they got a great deal when they found a baby bouncer for only $10 at Goodwill. What they didn’t expect was to find a semi-automatic rifle inside.

Veronica Alvarez-Rodriguez said she was attending a baby shower on Sunday, so she stopped by the Goodwill in Valparaiso to pick up a gift. That’s where she found a Baby Einstein baby bouncer in an unopened box that appeared to be new. For only $9.99, it was quite a bargain.

Alvarez-Rodriguez took the gift to the baby shower where the father-to-be opened the box and said “You guys got me a gun,” the Palm Beach Post reported.

Turns out, the baby bouncer box contained a Mossberg 715T semi-automatic rife. Although the gun wasn’t loaded and the chamber was locked, Alvarez-Rodriguez said the magazine inside the box was loaded.

So, I think I know what might have happened here.

Dude goes and finds a deal on the Mossberg .22 AR he’s been wanting, so he snaps it up. He didn’t bother to run it past the missus and, since it’s still a fairly sizeable purchase and he failed to talk to her about it, he now has to hide the gun. “Ah ha!” he thinks and stashes it in the baby bouncer box, taping it shut to reduce the chances of a casual peek inside.

A short time later, the wife is going through some things to donate and sees the box. Probably thinking something about how she thought she’d already donated the bouncer, she throws it in the donate pile.

Goodwill doesn’t look because it looks like a new in the box item.

Somewhere in Florida, there’s a very, very sad man who really wished he had just asked forgiveness since he failed to get permission.

Of course, this could have gone much worse. It could have put a gun in the hands of someone who was prohibited from having one, but those represent a tiny minority of the American public, so the odds were against that happening.

As Florida doesn’t have a universal background check requirement, there doesn’t seem to be any laws broken, even if accidentally. As a result, someone got a new gun for just $9.99.

And I hate them.

Nothing personal, just pure jealousy talking here.

Regardless, though, at least everyone involved got a good story out of the deal. That was arguably worth the $10 all on its own. As it was, though, they also got a new .22lr AR rifle out of the deal. Not too shabby.

I may or may not begin spending a lot more time at my local Goodwill, though.
