When Satire Hits Way Too Close To Home

For years, I was a huge fan of the satire site, The Onion. I loved how they would make these ridiculous stories that touched on the issues of the day but ultimately mocked them. I found myself digging deeper into the current state of the former Soviet Union when the site did a story about the Society for Creative Anachronisms conquering the nation, for example.

However, The Onion isn’t what it used to be. At least, not in my opinion. Their current work is lacking a bit…when it’s not overcome with leftist bias, that is.

That’s OK, though. Today, I get to enjoy the Babylon Bee.

The Bee also does satire, but they reject the left-leaning bias and instead attack everyone from the right–yes, even the right. However, sometimes they really hit too close to reality to be complete satire, in my opinion. For example a story they published yesterday titled, “Media Disappointed To Learn Armed Citizen Stopped Mass Shooting.”

The nation’s media outlets announced they were grieving today as an armed citizen stopped a mass shooting.

“We grieve that this tragedy we could have exploited for weeks on end was stopped by a good guy with a gun,” said one teary-eyed MSNBC reporter on the scene. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the shooter.”

“We are absolutely heartbroken and in shock over here,” said one New York Times journalist. “What could have given us weeks and weeks of frothing-at-the-mouth stories about gun control will now have to be suppressed since it does not align with our agenda.”

Now, we don’t usually cover what satire sites have to say because, well, they’re for comedy. The Babylon Bee is among the very best out there, but on this one they’re awfully close to the truth.

Oh, the above quotes are manufactured, of course. No one would actually say such a thing. Not out loud, anyway.

Yet let’s also be honest here, the media actually is disappointed that an armed citizen stopped a mass shooting.

Let’s look at history for a moment. Whenever there’s a mass shooting, the media almost immediately brings in every anti-gunner to sit in front of the cameras and repeat their standard talking points with absolutely no pushback. If they bring in a pro-gun voice, they’re immediately hammered by the host who doesn’t afford them the same courtesy he gave the anti-gun guest.

The truth is, the media loves a high body count because they can milk that for days. They can push an anti-gun narrative and Americans will be so appalled at what happened that they’ll listen.

So yeah, the Babylon Bee’s headline isn’t satire in the least. It’s the God’s honest truth about what really is transpiring in the subconscious–and maybe even the conscious–minds of many of this country’s so-called journalists. They’re upset not that a gunman tried to kill people in a Texas church, but that’s it doesn’t get to be the story they wanted.

As such, it’s already being swept under the rug. It’s how they deal with disappointment.
