Remember when governing by executive orders was bad?
When Trump signed an executive order, even though it was well within his constitutional powers, you’d have thought he was ordering people into the death camps we’d been told were coming. At least, that’s assuming the media was paying attention to what Trump did rather than whatever he tweeted that day.
Well, with President Joe Biden in office, one thing he’s seemed to do is Make Executive Orders Great Again.
And now he’s turning his pen on guns.
Speaking to reporters at the White House Wednesday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked when President Joe Biden plans to issue executive orders on limiting the Second Amendment. In response, she said he has been working with advisors and gun control groups in recent weeks on the orders and is urging Congress to pass new gun control legislation.
“He sees it vital to take steps on two tracks because congressional legislation, as the vice president conveyed this morning, obviously has a more permanent, lasting impact. Executive actions are of course an important lever that every president has at their disposal. There are current discussions and analyses internally of what steps can be taken. That has been ongoing for several weeks, even before these two recent tragedies, that he looks forward to getting an update on and seeing what can be moved forward on that front as well,” Psaki said. “It’s an ongoing policy process internally.”
Psaki didn’t give any details on what Biden has in the works, but I suppose she’s just circle back to those at some point.
This comes as pressure has mounted on Biden to take some kind of action on guns, particularly in the wake of two deadly mass shootings less than a week apart. Especially since gun control groups spent millions not just getting him elected, but also trying to shift Congress blue.
They expect some kind of return on their investment.
So far, Biden has resisted what must be a strong urge to use his executive power on guns, but we don’t know how much longer it will be. I actually expected something before now, so it’s interesting to see how this is playing out.
My guess is that they’re trying to be careful because they know damn good and well that they’re going to get challenged in court almost immediately. The left spent four years doing that to Trump, after all, so they almost have to expect turnabout to be fair play. Plus, well, we don’t let gun control go through without a fight, regardless of where it comes from.
They’re probably trying to make it as resilient to litigation as they can before rolling it out.
I don’t know that it will help all that much. First, the lawsuit will be filed in a gun-friendly area with a gun-friendly judge. Then it will crawl up the judicial system until, hopefully, it lands in front of a Supreme Court that is likely to land 5-4 in favor of the pro-gun position.
But expect these executive orders to come, nonetheless, and I expect them fairly soon.
