How lack of reaction to Hunter's deal will hurt Democrats

While no group of people is entirely monolithic in what they think, Democrats do tend to favor gun control. Many of them have campaigned on gun control. They’ve voted for it when they could and called for it when there wasn’t a bill to support.

Yet when Hunter Biden’s deal was announced, the loudest thing about Democrats was their silence.

Obviously, we noticed that, but the problem for Democrats? A lot of other people noticed, too.

First, this from Fox News:

Fox News Digital asked multiple Democrats in favor of gun-control whether the first son is being appropriately held accountable for the alleged gun crime.

Inquiries to the offices of Reps. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), James Clyburn (D-S.C.), Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), and Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) were not returned.

Fox News Digital sent inquiries to Giffords, Everytown for Gun Safety, Brady: United Against Gun Violence, March for Our Lives, and Moms Demand Action, asking the prominent gun-control groups whether avoiding jail time is an appropriate punishment for such a gun charge, but those also went unanswered.

Swalwell did tweet about the deal, arguing that Hunter accepted responsibility so all is well but ignores the fact that literally anyone else, even someone who accepted responsibility, isn’t getting off quite so easily.

But at least he acknowledged it, so I’ll give him credit for that. He’s pretty much the only one, though.

Even at the state level, people are noticing and commenting on the lack of commenting. From New Hampshire:

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month. Do you know where your local member of Congress is on strict enforcement of gun laws?

When it comes to Hunter Biden, probably not.

Democratic Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) calls herself “a dedicated advocate for curbing gun violence,” and she has been outspoken in her support for strict gun control, including a total ban on the sale of America’s most popular guns. She tweeted earlier this month that it’s “a time to remember those we have lost to #gunviolence and recommit ourselves to ending this epidemic.”

But when a plea deal was announced on June 20 letting President Biden’s son walk on gun charges with just a misdemeanor and no jail time — a “sweetheart deal,” according to House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) — Kuster had no comment.

She wasn’t alone.

See, the problem here is that this is a golden opportunity for these Democrats and groups. They could easily step up and condemn the deal, say that this sends the wrong message to others regarding gun laws, and at least look less like hypocrites.

They haven’t.

Instead, they’re just remaining silent and hoping that no one will notice. The problem for them is that they have.

As news stories surface regarding the lack of comment, you’d better believe that many of these people will be hearing about this as they face re-election.

This shouldn’t be partisan. Hunter broke the law and we all know it. He knows it. The prosecutor knows it. It’s not a secret by any stretch of the imagination, and the fact of the matter is that no one is saying anything because Hunter’s father sits in the Oval Office.

They’re going to get hammered with this hypocrisy and a lot of voters are probably going to take issue with it as well. We’re supposed to be a nation of laws, not a nation of men. Hunter’s sweetheart deal isn’t going to play well in a lot of places, particularly for vulnerable Democrats.

This was poorly handled by them and anyone can see it.
