Tom Wolf once said that a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. That’s because sometimes, theory runs smack into reality and people come to discover that things they thought were deep-seated principles were far more malleable than they originally believed.
Democrats, for example, were pretty big into the whole “defund the police” thing a few years back. It was particularly loud among some in Minnesota.
Now, reality smacked one such Democrat in the head and she’s singing a different tune.
A far-left Minneapolis activist was the victim of a brutal armed car-jacking that occurred in the driveway of her home on Tuesday evening.
Shivanthi Sathanandan, a radical leftist and second vice chairwoman of the Democratic Farmer Labor party in Minneapolis, who was left bruised and bloodied during the incident, is calling for “accountability” despite her past history of being a notable “defund the police” agitator.
Sathanandan said in a Facebook post that she suffered a broken leg, deep lacerations to her head, and cuts and bruises all over her body when four armed juveniles allegedly beat her to the ground in front of her children and then stole her vehicle in broad daylight, according to KSTP.
“Look at my face. REMEMBER ME when you are thinking about supporting letting juveniles and young people out of custody to roam our streets instead of HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. You could have been reading the obituary for me and my children today,” Sathanandan wrote.
This comes after posts back in 2020 bragging about how they were going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department.
A lot of people are asking Sathanandan if she regrets her earlier anti-police efforts, though it doesn’t appear she’s answered.
Here’s the thing, though. I won’t celebrate what happened here. I’m not remotely happy and I don’t feel somehow justified because she somehow got what she supported “good and hard,” as some have termed it.
I’d rather people be able to remain blissfully unaware that violent crime is a thing that can happen to them.
I sincerely hope the perpetrators are arrested and fully prosecuted for their crimes.
That said, I do also hope some others who think defunding police departments is some kind of answer to whatever problems they see can also see the potential outcomes of such policies. While various police departments have their issues, those need to be addressed for what they are. You don’t gut a department, maybe throw some social workers at the problem, and then get shocked when you find out that police deterrence is a thing.
Couple that with revolving door policies at so many larger city jails and guess what happens? Yeah, you get prominent Democrats getting carjacked and beaten in front of their kids.
It shouldn’t happen.
Unfortunately, it does and it would behoove lawmakers to look at the world far more realistically than they have been, particularly with regard to things like law enforcement. Defunding the police isn’t going to net anyone the results they want.
Unless, of course, they want to see their friends and allies beaten in the streets.
