The state of Oregon has been going deep down the anti-gun rabbit hole for a while now. Measure 114 is just one of a series of infringements on the right to keep and bear arms, and I don't care what their anti-gun state Supreme Court has to say about it.
But not everyone in the state is an idiot when it comes to guns.
In fact, one state lawmaker knows first hand how little gun control actually accomplishes. Oregon State Rep. Alex Skarlatos has all the evidence he needs to know better. How? Well, there was this terrorist attack you see...
A release from the 4th District lawmaker, said just one day after the Oregon Court of Appeals upheld Measure 114 – which Skarlatos called, “One of the most extreme gun control laws in American History”, the Democratic supermajority in the state legislature previewed a slate of new gun restrictions. Skarlatos said the proposals unfairly target law-abiding gun owners while doing nothing to address crime or improve mental health.
Skarlatos said, “In 2015, I survived and help stop an attempted mass shooting by an ISIS terrorist on a train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris”. Skarlatos said, “If a terrorist was able to get their hands on a fully automatic AK-47 in the middle of a ‘gun free’ continent, it’s clear that stripping Oregonians of their constitutional rights won’t prevent crime. Instead of attacking responsible gun owners, the Majority should focus on empowering law enforcement and ensuring adequate mental health services”.
The fact that the terrorist in that particular attack was thwarted is largely irrelevant. He still injured four people before Skarlatos and his friends were able to subdue him.
And yes, he got an AK-47. Authorities believe he got it via a Belgian gang which sold the rifle illegally.
Yes, in one of the most gun-controlled regions on the planet.
For all the talk of how great European gun control is, they were still able to provide an ISIS terrorist with a couple of firearms. Skarlatos and his friends helped put the bad guy down, but one of his friends was injured and at least one person nearly died from the attack. He's seen gun control fail.
Moreover, he's seen it fail in a time and place where he was disarmed. He and his friends were fortunate. It could have been a whole lot worse for all of them, though I greatly respect their actions that day. Better to die on your feet than sitting on your butt praying the merciless will show mercy.
Oregon is bound and determined to pass new gun control laws. Proponents of these laws claim they will keep guns out of the wrong hands.
Skarlatos's rise to prominence is proof of just how wrongheaded that entire premise actually is. The wicked shall continue to be wicked. You won't dissuade them with pathetic attempts to deny them weapons. They'll find ways around those laws and others.
All they'll do is make it so when some average citizen has to see a gun pointed at them, they'll be less than equipped to deal with it.
