CBS News has been know to push poorly researched politically-motivated pieces from time to time, and as a result, they’ve earned a reputation for being “Rather biased.”

Today, it appears that the network of Dan Rather and Mary Mapes are on quest to push the story that Navy Yard Shooter Aaron Alexis attempted to purchase and AR-15, but was turned down:

Washington Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis tried to buy an AR-15 assault rifle at a Virginia gun store last week after test firing one, but the story wouldn’t sell it to him, CBS News has learned.

The reason for the refusal isn’t clear.

Alexis then purchased a shotgun he used in his rampage, sources tell CBS News.

CBS’s claim runs counter to stories from the Washington Times and the Washington Post.

Emily Miller of the Times reports:

Aaron Alexis passed Federal Bureau Investigation and Virginia state background checks to purchase a shotgun from Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Va., over the weekend.

Alexis did not attempt to purchase a rifle or handgun from the store, The Washington Times has learned exclusively.

Tom Jackman of the Post visited the store, and spoke directly with the company’s lawyer.

Alexis rented a rifle and purchased ammunition, J. Michael Slocum, the store’s lawyer, said. A shooting session costs $25 without a membership. Though there was some chatter that Alexis tried to buy an AR-15, the rifle used in other mass shootings, Slocum said he had “no information that he tried to buy an AR-15.”

In a separate article, Miller goes on to note that Alexis rented an AR-15 to use on the firing line at the range, but never attempted to purchase a similar firearm.
