At approximately 7:45 p.m. Tuesday night, a Miami University student in Oxford, OH met a man to purchase a car he found on Craigslist. The student, Volodymyr Kovalenko, 23, said he agreed to the seller’s price of $4,000 and arranged to meet him at a friend’s apartment.

Anyone wanna take a shot at guessing what happened next?

Kovalenko’s and his friend, Jared Goldhamer, 20, were at the apartment with another roommate when the seller and his accomplice arrived, and said the seller appeared “jittery and paranoid” as he entered the apartment.

As soon as Kovalenko handed the man the money for the car, the seller pulled out a gun and fired three rounds, hitting both Kovalenko and Goldhamer, before taking the money and fleeing the scene.

One of Goldhamer’s roommates, Brett Balick, called 911 and informed the dispatcher, “Someone just came into my house and shot my friend in the leg! There’s blood all over my floor. He’s losing a lot of blood.”

Both students were taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital. Goldhamer was released Wednesday and Kovalenko remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After the shooting, Goldhamer told his father, “It was the strangest thing, they just started shooting out of nowhere.”

Kovalenko told police he struggled with the suspect for the gun, which discharged and shot him in the leg. The weapon dropped on the floor and Kovalenko kicked it under the couch, according to the police report.

Police do not believe this was a random act and are fairly confident the two college students were targeted.

“We believe that (the) suspects are possibly known to the victims. Whether they’re directly known or have some type of link to them, we’re still trying to figure out. But this was certainly not a random act,” said Lt. Geoff Robinson, with the Oxford Police Department.

The two suspects remain at large. One is described as a  dark-complected white man, about five-feet, 10-inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds, wearing a gray hoodie. The second suspect is described as a black man, with dreadlocks, about five-feet, 11-inches tall and weighing about 190 pounds, wearing a gray hoodie.
