Bobby Packard heard the commotion from his bedroom. When Brian arrived home, he noticed the garage door was open, something that was off.

After Shinkle shot multiple rounds at the Packards, the 17-year-old grabbed a shotgun and returned fire, hitting the robber in the stomach.

Brian explained his version of the story:

Well, there was a guy that came in with a pry bar and he pried the garage door open and he came in and kicked my dad’s door open after he searched through the room right next to my dad’s… The guy started shooting, he shot like twice and then I ran and got the shotgun and loaded a bullet in it. I didn’t think I was gonna have to shoot him, but he shot three more times at me and I had to shoot him… I really thought me and my dad were gonna die.

When Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to the scene, they found Shinkle in the front yard with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital, where he remains.

“He [Brian] really stepped up and saved us. You know, I couldn’t be prouder of him,” said Bobby Packard.

Charges against Shinkle are pending. Investigators are still determining Shinkle’s motive behind the break-in. They have yet to speak with him because of his injuries.
