Does Impeachment Loom For Obama Over Fast & Furious?

Buried quite intentionally in the wall-to-wall media coverage of the Republican “wave” election of 2014 was a “document dump” of more than 64,000 documents that the Obama Administration hid for years regarding the Department of Justice’s gun-running plot to Mexican narco-terrorists known as Operation Fast and Furious.

After years of legal battles between the House Oversight Committee and Attorney General Eric Holder, 64,280 redacted Operation Fast and Furious documents held under President Obama’s assertion of executive privilege since 2012, have been turned over by the Department of Justice after an order from U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson. The Justice Department was originally ordered to turn over a list of documents, better known as a Vaughn Index, with explanations as to why documents fall under executive privilege claims by November 1.

“When Eric Holder wants to know why he was the first Attorney General held in criminal contempt of Congress, he can read the judge’s order that compelled the production of 64,280 pages that he and President Obama illegitimately and illegally withheld from Congress. Since these pages still do not represent the entire universe of the documents the House of Representatives is seeking related to the Justice Department’s cover-up of the botched gun-walking scandal that contributed to the death of a Border Patrol agent, our court case will continue,” Chairman Darrell Issa said in a statement. “I am deeply concerned that some redactions to these documents may still be inappropriate and contrary to the judge’s order in the case. This production is nonetheless a victory for the legislative branch, a victory for transparency, and a victory for efforts to check Executive Branch power. As the production is extensive and may contain sensitive information, our investigative staff will be carefully examining the documents turned over last night.”

Unlike a previous Bush-era “gun-walking” program that was conducted with the Mexican government in an attempt to identify arms traffickers that was called off when ATF agents could not successfully track and control firearms, Fast and Furious flooded the Sinaloa drug cartel with thousands of semi-automatic rifles and pistols from American gun dealers working under the orders of the government.

The weapons sent over the border, curiously enough, were the same firearms that then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Attorney General Eric Holder, and President Obama desired to ban as they pushed what became known as the 90-percent lie. Obama, Holder, and Clinton were hoping to build public support for reinstatement of an “assault weapons ban” similar to the one that expired in 2004.

Oversight Committee Chairman Issa notes that thousands of documents are still being hidden by the Obama Administration as they attempt to stonewall the committee. The documents may include those which suggest that Attorney General Eric Holder perjured himself under oath when he testified about Fast and Furious, and documents which suggest high level discussion of the gun-walking plot both within the Department of Justice and within the White House.

If there is evidence uncovered in the document dump that suggests the Obama Administration was criminally complicit in either weapon smuggling or an unlawful cover-up of the gun-smuggling plot after Congress began investigating it, talk of impeachment in a Republican-dominated House and Senate would seem unavoidable.

More than 300 people have become casualties of the weapons smuggled to the cartel by the Obama Department of Justice, including law enforcement officers on both ides of the border.
