Florida House votes today on repealing "stand your ground"... so they can kill it.

Florida’s Republican-dominated House is giving Democrats loyal to trial lawyers a vote on repealing Florida’s “stand your ground” law to shut them up:

The state’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law has been a widely discussed, even protested law–especially so after George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder charges in July for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. On Thursday, the state’s Republican-controlled House is expected to keep intact the state’s law.

The eight-year-old law allows the use of deadly force if someone believes their life is in jeopardy. The House has scheduled a vote on a Democratic-backed measure to repeal the law.

The move by the House is unusual since the Legislature doesn’t often spend time on legislation that has little chance of passage.

But Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford agreed to have a hearing on the self-defense law following protests that occurred this summer at the Capitol. A group of young people upset with the acquittal of George Zimmerman in Martin’s death spent weeks demanding that Gov. Rick Scott call a special session to repeal the law.

Trial lawyers are being a push to repeal the law not because they care about drug-abusing, gun-dealing, street-fighting thugs, but because a provision in the law grants civil immunity to people who are brought to trial and found not guilty.

They want to be able to sue someone who successfully defends themselves in criminal court to drive up their billable hours enhance their own private fortunes by winning settlements. It has nothing to do with justice. It’s all about the money.

House Republicans are going to allow the vote to kill the bill. Prepare to hear the whining of those who claim they want “justice,” but who really want cash.
