The soulless eyes above belong to Jaspar Spires, who allegedly stabbed 24-year-old Kevin Sutherland to death while fighting Sutherland over a cell phone.
The passenger who was killed during a robbery aboard a Metro train on July 4 was punched until he fell and was then repeatedly stabbed in the chest, abdomen, back, side and arms, according to a D.C. police arrest affidavit filed in court on Tuesday.
Police said in the document that the victim, Kevin Joseph Sutherland, 24, of Northeast, had struggled with the assailant after he grabbed Sutherland’s cellphone from his waist. After the stabbing, police said the suspect threw Sutherland’s cellphone at his body and then robbed two other passengers before fleeing when the train reached the NoMa-Gallaudet stop.
Spires carried out his attack in front of horrified passengers—whom he subsequently robbed at the point of a knife dripping with Sutherland’s blood—with virtually no chance that a lawful concealed carrier might have pulled a gun and stop him before he could kill Sutherland.
Sutherland was a former intern for Democrat Rep. Tim Himes of Connecticut from May 2010 to August 2010, and August 2012 to December 2012.
Am absolutely heartbroken by the tragic loss of intern, staffer & wonderful friend, Kevin Sutherland. I’ve known few as selfless & decent.

Sadly, Himes is the very same gun control zealot who once stated that supporters of the right of armed self-defense have “blood on their hands.”
No, sir. We would have vastly preferred that someone with a concealed carry pistol drew it and warned the violent Spires to stand down before he spilled blood, or if the worst had to happen, had shot Spires in Sutherland’s defense.
Your intern died because of policies you support that ensure only criminals are armed, Rep. Himes. If anyone has blood on their hands, you do.
This is a teachable moment, sir.
Please learn from it.
