Is Ben Carson Our New Second Amendment Champion?

Many voters are clearly tired of “politics as usual,” a fact reflected in current 2016 Presidential polls as non-traditional candidates dominate the Republican Presidential field, and perform well in head-to-head matchups against establishment Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton.

Among the rookie politicians doing well at this time is retired pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson, who is solidly in second place behind reality television star and businessman Donald Trump.

While Trump has a concealed carry permit and mouthed the right platitudes recently, he’s also embraced universal background checks, waiting periods, and bans on certain kinds of firearms in the past.

Dr. Carson made similar statements in 2013, but has since worked hard to educate himself on the issue of gun rights. Carson has been very clear on his newfound support of the Second Amendment after the recent mass murder at an Oregon Community College.

Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson used to support certain gun control measures, like bans on assault weapons and armor-piercing bullets, but said he felt differently after reading about tyranny.

“Reading people like Daniel Webster, who talked about tyranny in Europe and said it would never occur in America because the American people were armed,” Carson told USA Today in an interview published on Tuesday morning. “When you look at tyranny and how it occurs, the pattern is so consistent: Get rid of the guns for the people first so you can go in and dominate them.”

He also said that a ban on certain assault weapons will not prevent mass shootings and instead suggested that teachers or school officials be armed.

“Would that have prevented this? No,” he said of weapons bans. “Would it have prevented the one before? No. I’m for doing things that work, not for things that stroke the emotions.”

“If I had a little kid in kindergarten somewhere I would feel much more comfortable if I knew on that campus there was a police officer or somebody who was trained with a weapon,” Carson continued.

And when asked if teachers should be armed, he replied, “If the teacher was trained in the use of that weapon and had access to it, I would be much more comfortable if they had one than if they didn’t.”

This new understanding has angered the establishment media, which is dishonestly reporting his position.

Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who is a leading Republican presidential contender, has intensified his defense of gun rights in response to last week’s Oregon campus massacre, arguing that the Second Amendment is more sacred than spilled blood.

Of course, that isn’t what Carson said at all. After his dishonest lede, New York Times propagandist Alan Rappeport reluctantly continued:

He also suggested that the victims should have had the courage to attack their assailant and accused President Obama of politicizing the tragedy by embracing the families of the dead.

In a Facebook question-and-answer session Monday night, Mr. Carson tried to show empathy with victims by recalling that two of his cousins were killed in the streets and that, as a doctor, he had removed many bullets from the bodies of gunshot victims. But he said the right to bear arms was paramount.

“I never saw a body with bullet holes that was more devastating than taking the right to arm ourselves away,” Mr. Carson wrote.

Clearly, Carson’s reading on the important of the Second Amendment as the key protection against tyranny has stuck with him.

He’s merely stating here that he understands that while the pin-prick violence of street crime or even the shootings of several dozen innocents is horrible, these much smaller crimes are far preferable than the stripping away the natural right to bear arms as many countries have done.
This practice of stripping away essential liberties for the illusion of temporary safety has unfortunately often set the stage for genocides and democides, which led to the slaughter of hundreds of millions in the past century alone.

Carson did not become the top doctor in his field because he was dull or timid or unwilling to continue educating himself.

If he continues to show strong and unwavering support for the Second Amendment rights of Americans as he’s done in the past week, he could become a wonderful, soft-spoken and yet firm supporter of the right to bear arms which the biased left wing media will have a hard time easily dismissing.
