The hysteria-driven media is attempting to claim that there is presently an “active shooter” at Alpine High School in Alpine, Texas.

This claim is entirely false.

There was the report of a single student shot by one or two suspects who then apparently fled the scene and are no longer thought to be on campus. The school of approximately 280 students is now on lockdown as law enforcement sweeps the scene and conducts an investigation, but there is not shooting on-going at this time, and it is not a mass casualty event.

An “active shooting” is an often abused term rendered absolutely useless by the mainstream, which now routinely apply the term to any shooting, at any time, in any public place, regardless of the number of shots fired, the number of victims, or the kind of incident under discussion, whether or not the act of shooting is in fact actively going on.

An actual active shooting is a specific term to describe an on-going mass murder.

Because the term “active shooter” has so been abused by the news media, law enforcement professionals are beginning to move away from the term. What used to be called an “active shooter incident” is now being called “random mass murder.”

While I’m still appalled at this incident and feel heart-broken for the faculty, staff, students, and their families, and especially the family of the victim, we have to stop allowing the media to constantly lie to us and craft false narratives about the world around us so that they can manipulate us with fear.

Words mean things, and it’s time for us to start demanding for the media to move away from hysterical drama and start reporting actual facts again.

Update: As is almost always the case, reports of multiple shooters appear to be false. There was one shooter, who shot another student in the butt and and then shot herself.

ABC News is reporting roughly the same thing.

One person is dead after shooting a student at Alpine High School in Brewster County, Texas, this morning.

The preliminary information indicates that a female student shot another female student in a bathroom and may have then taken her own life, a law enforcement source told ABC News.

The shooter died from what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson told ABC News.

We have information gleaned from social media that suggests that the deceased shooter is a female Hispanic student, and may be a junior at the school.

In addition to the injured and dead students, a responding deputy managed to have a negligent discharge and wounded himself.

His condition is not known at this time.
