Raleigh Officer Shoots Bad Guy... And Another Officer. Oops.

So, you remember yesterday when we covered the shooting in Raleigh that saw both a suspect and and officer shot?

About that:

A preliminary investigation into the Wednesday afternoon officer-involved shooting at a southwest Raleigh condominium complex revealed that the injured officer was shot by a fellow Raleigh police officer.

The shooting happened at about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday as officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded to a residential break-in call at 1230 University Court, at the Lake Park Condominiums, a complex near the intersection of Avent Ferry and Lake Dam roads.

According to officials, Officer C.N. Chandler was hit by friendly fire when he, Officer R.D. VanHouten and Officer T.A. Dunford encountered Chijioke Kennedy Madueke, 28, who was armed with a knife.

Chandler and Madueke were both taken to WakeMed for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Chandler was released Thursday, and Madueke remained at WakeMed.

It hasn’t been stated yet whether it was Officer R.D. VanHouten or Officer T.A. Dunford who holed Officer Chandler, and earned the nickname “Doc Holliday” for his shooting prowess…

… or lack of it.

There’s a reason the fourth rule of gun safety is “be sure of your target and what’s behind it.”

It is probable that the offending officer is going to be sent back to remedial training, and probably won’t be getting Christmas card from Officer Chandler this year.
