Of all the words you could use to describe former New York mayor and gun control sugar daddy Michael Bloomberg, “centrist” isn’t the first to come to mind. Yet for New York Post columnist Michael Godwin, Bloomberg’s moderation (stop laughing!) is the biggest reason why he believes Bloomberg should run for president.

This is not an endorsement, certainly not for the general election. Trump’s economic policies are boosting incomes and opportunities for tens of millions of people and his America First agenda is a road map for national renewal. Assuming the president stops shooting himself in the foot, he will be a formidable opponent.

But America needs two viable parties competing for many of the same voters to make our system of checks and balances a governing reality. These days, the Democratic Party is veering too far left under the leadership of arrogant coastal elites who are hostile to free speech, religion and the everyday concerns of working and middle-class citizens.

Wait… so the Democrats are moving too far left under the leadership of arrogant coastal elites who are hostile to the constitutional rights and everyday concerns of middle-class Americans, and your answer is Michael Bloomberg?? The founder of Everytown for Gun Safety is a living, breathing, caricature of the arrogant coastal elite! He spends tens of millions of dollars every year attacking fundamental rights like the right to keep and bear arms, but even the size of your soda or the volume of your headphones are in the mayor’s crosshairs. If Godwin is concerned about the far left drift of the Democrats, encouraging Michael Bloomberg to run isn’t the answer. It’s more like hiring Ronald McDonald to be your personal trainer because you’re concerned that eating too much fast food is ruining your figure.

While Bloomberg tells friends he doesn’t believe there is any place for him in the campaign, he would shake up the race and give voters a sensible alternative. He’s got a team eager to go and money would be no object, allowing him to make the case that he knows how to run a government and will do for the nation what he did for New York.

As he put it in a Washington Post op-ed last week: “The presidential aspirants are not short on big ideas. But voters must demand they explain how they intend to move from proposing plans to actually implementing them, including passing them through Congress. Those who dodge the question by speaking of revolution and the bully pulpit aren’t up to the job.”

God help us if Michael Bloomberg is the “sensible alternative” to the current crop of Democrats running to be president. Yes, he’s a capitalist and not a socialist, but in the Democrat primary that’s not likely to help Bloomberg if he decides to run. Instead, he’d have to play up his history of banning and restricting your guns, your soda, styrofoam packaging, black roofs, and so much more. Even that would likely not be enough to sway the Democrats’ base to embrace Bloomberg’s candidacy. No, there’s no real path to victory for Michael Bloomberg. He’s too much of a capitalist and a backer of Wall Street for the hard left, and too much of a nanny-stater to appeal to real centrists. Democrats may be in danger of nominating someone who is far outside the mainstream of American politics, but encouraging Michael Bloomberg to run isn’t the answer.
