Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has long been a fan of more gun control laws, and a longtime opponent of a robust right to keep and bear arms. In Senator Murphy’s world, you can ban the most commonly sold rifle in the U.S. without infringing on anyone’s 2nd Amendment rights. You can require Americans to get a permission slip from the government before owning a firearm and not step on the right to own a firearm. In fact, I’ve yet to see a gun control proposal introduced that Senator Murphy’s actually found objectionable.

Now, despite the fact that Murphy’s demonized millions of lawful gun owners by claiming (among other things) that only killers would miss AR-15’s, he’s promising a “fresh, less polarized conversation” in a new book about gun control. Coming in January of 2020, Murphy’s book “The Violence Inside Us: A Brief History of an Ongoing American Tragedy” will, according to the author, delve into the roots of violence and as well as tell a “a deeply personal journey” of his own support for gun control.

I haven’t read the book, and doubt I’ll be provided with a review copy, but I’m pretty sure I can tell you the gist of what it will say.  Murphy will claim that the vast majority of gun owners actually side with him, that all of his proposed laws are just “common sense” and wouldn’t have any impact on the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans, and that politicians who oppose his gun control agenda are just greedy pawns of “the gun lobby”. He’ll likely trot out his claim that Connecticut’s gun licensing law reduced homicides by 40%, even though Dr. John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center has pointed out the problems with the study that found such promising results.

I suspect Senator Murphy won’t touch on the fact that violent crime and homicides have declined by almost 50% in the United States since the historic highs in the early 1990’s. I’m pretty sure that Senator Murphy will want to leave readers with the impression that violent crime is at epidemic levels and getting worse, instead of letting readers know that our violent crime is at one of the lowest levels in recorded U.S. history. When Murphy does talk about increases in crime, I doubt he’ll include some of the recent failures of gun control, like the skyrocketing homicide rates in Baltimore since Maryland passed sweeping gun control legislation in 2013. Something tells me that Colorado’s 25% spike in violent crime since its passage of gun control bills that same year won’t make it into his book either.

Two more predictions:  Senator Murphy’s book won’t sell a lot of copies, but he’ll get an awful lot of press coverage from it, and those Democrats still in the running for their party’s presidential nomination will all agree with Senator Murphy’s conclusion that what we really need are a lot of new gun control laws that they call “commonsense gun safety reform”.
