Booty call was set-up for armed robbery, but intended victim had gun of his own

If nothing else, stories like this one make me glad my dating days are over. I may still have to worry about my home being broken into or being the random target of a violent criminal, but at least I don’t have to wonder if a hook up is going to turn into a life-or-death struggle for survival, as was the case for one man in Homestead, Florida.

Twenty-five-year-old Halli Conley called up a man and asked him to come over to a house in Homestead, police said. When he walked into the bedroom, they said he was in for a surprise: two men were also there — and they were there to rob him.

According to an arrest report, a stroke of luck may have saved his life and gave him a chance to fight back.

One of the suspects, 36-year-old Isaia Perez, appeared in Miami-Dade bond court on Thursday.

According to the Homestead police report, the incident happened last Friday, when Conley called the victim over to the home in the 600 block of Northwest Ninth Court.

Police said the man arrived just before 9:30 p.m. and after walking in the bedroom, noticed that a man, later identified as Perez, was sitting on a chair. Conley then left and then came back with a second man, later identified as 35-year-old Rafael Ciprian.

Ciprian had a gun, police said. He then pointed it at the victim and told him “I’m going to kill you” and demanded his property, according to police.

The victim, who’s name has not been released by police, reportedly complied with Ciprian’s demands and handed over both cash and a phone. According to authorities, despite the victim’s cooperation Ciprian then pointed his gun at the victim’s head and pulled the trigger, only for it to jam.

Police said that gave the victim the opportunity to pull out his own gun. The report states that Perez came up to the man “in an aggressive manner,” leading the victim to shoot Perez in the arm.

Then, a larger fight broke out, police said. The report states that Ciprian began to pistol-whip the victim and Perez and Conley soon joined in, punching him while Ciprian continued the pistol-whipping.

Police said the victim then shot Ciprian in the foot and pleaded with him to let him go.

“You’re going to die,” Ciprian replied, according to the report. Conley then stabbed him with an “unknown object,” police said.

The man told police he “fought for his life and was able to get away.”

Well, that sure tops my “worst first date” story, which involved a mild case of food poisoning and a major bout of projective vomiting over much of the interior of my 1973 Dodge Dart Swinger. Never could get the smell out of the car and I had to throw away about a dozen cassette tapes that were too coated with yuck for me to try to clean, but at least I didn’t get pistol whipped, punched, and assaulted by two random dudes when I thought I was gonna get lucky.

Conley, along with her two alleged accomplices, are currently in custody and are now facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and false imprisonment. The armed Romeo, on the other hand, isn’t expected to face any charges since it sounds like he was acting in self-defense. Simply being alive may not have been the happy ending he was looking for when he headed over to Conley’s apartment that night but it sure beats the alternative, and if he had decided to leave his gun behind this story could have had a very different outcome.
