It’s hard for me to believe that anyone on the left is truly excited about the prospect of another four years of Joe Biden in the White House, but if there’s any part of the Democrats’ base that fits that bill it would be the gun control lobby. Biden’s been a staunch ally of the anti-gunners long before he moved into the Oval Office, and over the past three years he’s continually done their bidding; nominating one of their own to head up the ATF, empowering that agency to flout the separation of powers and craft new gun laws under the guise of modifying existing regulations, and stumping for a ban on so-called assault weapons on what seems like a weekly basis.
It shouldn’t come as a shock or surprise, then, to learn that the gun control lobby is endorsing Biden’s re-election bid, though the Associated Press treats this like it’s big news.
The endorsement, obtained by The Associated Press in advance of the formal release, represents the first time the groups have jointly announced support for a presidential candidate. The groups include Brady and its youth-led arm, Team Enough; Community Justice Action Fund; Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action; and Giffords.
It also follows similar joint endorsements from abortion rights groups, labor unions and climate organizations — a strategy meant to demonstrate Biden’s strength among various party constituencies as he faces nominal primary challengers and skepticism from many Democratic voters over whether he should run for a second term.
In their endorsement, the groups pointed to the Biden administration’s record in establishing policies meant to reduce gun violence — most notably a bipartisan law enacted last year that marked the most comprehensive effort to restrict access to firearms in three decades.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris are leading the strongest gun-sense administration in American history, a title they have earned by doing everything in their power to protect our families and communities,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, Executive Director of Moms Demand Action.
More like doing everything in their power along some things they have no power to do… not to protect families and communities but to criminalize the right to keep and bear arms. Biden’s gone after the “scourge” of disabled shooters using stabilizing braces, FFL’s making minor paperwork errors, and citizens building their own firearms, and his Justice Department has been working overtime trying to block anyone it deems to be non-law abiding from accessing their Second Amendment rights, but when it comes to actually prosecuting those who are causing damage to their communities it’s a far different story.
Last year, federal prosecutors in the District’s U.S. attorney’s office chose not to prosecute 67 percent of those arrested by police officers in cases that would have been tried in D.C. Superior Court.
That figure, first reported earlier this month on the substack DC Crime Facts, nearly doubled from 2015, when prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office declined to prosecute 35 percent of such cases.
Not like that matters to the gun control lobby. Biden’s U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C. could reject 100% of the cases brought to his office and Everytown, Brady, and Giffords would still be all-in for Biden next year. Who else are they going to back? Robert Kennedy, Jr.? Ron DeSantis? Donald Trump?
Biden’s been a staunch ally of the anti-gunners, and now they’re doing him a solid by throwing their support behind him early in the 2024 cycle. As the AP suggests, the timing has less to do with any recent moves on Biden and is more about convincing reluctant Democrats that he should be their guy next year. The real gift from the anti-gun groups will come once campaign season is underway in earnest, when they’ll direct tens of millions of dollars in spending toward boosting his re-election bid. The gun control groups know that another four years of a Democrat in the White House has the potential to reshape our Second Amendment rights for decades to come; from using the ATF to go after semi-automatic firearms and private sales to packing the Supreme Court full of justices who’ll overturn Heller and Bruen entirely. If Biden loses next year, on the other hand, the prohibitionists will be dealt a major setback in their quest to criminalize our right to keep and bear arms. The stakes are enormous, so of course they’re going all in on the gun-grabber-in-chief.
