Last week Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Democrat-Farmer-Labor leaders in the legislature announced a proposal for a planned special session on several gun control proposals that was slated to begin this morning. While the governor unveiled his plan to bring lawmakers back to the state capitol on Monday, October 6 for a week-long session, he didn''t actually schedule a session.
Well, it's Monday morning, and though there might be some lawmakers hanging around the capitol complex, there is no special session underway.
🚨 REMINDER: There is no special session today. That rumor? 100% fake news.

The Governor hasn’t called a special session — not even close.
If and when he does, trust us — you’ll hear it from us first, and we’ll shout it from the rooftops.
Until then, stay focused, stay ready,… pic.twitter.com/7aNYhxct4J
Since Walz and DFL officials announced their plan for a special session, the governor's come under criticism from groups like Everytown for Gun Safety as well as gun control advocates in the medical community and some parents of students at the Catholic school that was targeted by a spree killer back in August, who say Walz should stop delaying the session and move forward with his proposal.
Walz alone has the power to call a session, yet despite his repeated pledges to do so and last week's political theater suggesting that one would be gaveled in on Monday morning, he's clearly reluctant to do so. So what gives?
Well, they don't have the votes for their proposed gun ban, for starters. Democrats have been falsely claiming that Republican opposition is the only thing standing in the way of passage of an "assault weapon" ban and prohibitions on "large capacity" magazines, but as Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus chairman Bryan Strawser told Bearing Arms last week, DFL officials are ignoring the opposition in their own ranks. According to Strawser as many as four DFL state senators are either noncommittal or opposed outright to a gun ban, which means there's enough bipartisan opposition to scuttle the semi-auto ban that Walz is demanding.
So long as Democrats keep posturing about a ban without actually holding a vote, they can claim that opposition is one-sided. If a special session were called and a bill started moving, though, it would quickly become clear that Republicans aren't the only ones standing in the way of an unconstitutional move to prohibit the sale of commonly-owned semi-automatic long guns... and Walz's narrative would fall apart.
There does appear to be bipartisan support for things like grants to schools to improve security measures and access to mental health, but in a truly despicable move, Walz is essentially holding those bills hostage because he doesn't have the votes for his gun grab.
If Walz wants a special session in response to the Annunciation shooting he should schedule one and let the votes fall where they may, even if he won't get everything he wants. In fact, he might not get anything he wants in terms of gun control, but public and private schools that are desperately in need of funds that would go towards everything from hiring armed security to fixing broken locks on doors and windows would still benefit from the measures that do have enough support to pass.
Walz looks to be more interested in using the Annunciation shooting to try to score political points against Republicans than to do anything to make Minnesota schools safer places for students and staff. But by proposing a special session last week and then failing to follow through by calling lawmakers back to the capitol, the governor has revealed his political impotence in addition to his partisan hackery. It's not just Republicans who are standing in the way of Walz's gun and magazine ban, but it's Walz alone who is blocking legislative efforts to improve school security and mental health resources for Minnesotans in need.
