Around 3:04 AM on Saturday morning, officers responded to Freelon’s Club at 440 North Mill Street, Commander Tyree Jones said in a news release.

Jessie James Newson, 27, had been shot near the main entrance of the nightclub. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Newson had been in an altercation inside the club prior to the shooting. The victim drove a dark colored Audi toward the front entrance and exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. A security officer employed by Freelon’s discharged his weapon several times striking Newson.

The security guard was detained for questioning but no charges will be filed at this time.

Unfortunately, the Freelon’s Club is no stranger to such incidents. Another man was shot by a security officer outside the club in 2014, and he came forward to tell his story after hearing about this most recent shooting.

“If I didn’t have my identification on that I’m a Veteran, showing my law enforcement identification, I think I wouldn’t have walked away. Because the security guards literally left me on the ground bleeding,” said Terrance Thomas.

Thomas says in November of 2014, a Freelons security guard shot him four times as he was walking away.

He says he was trying to move his vehicle that was blocked by a security guard’s vehicle, but was told he had to pay to have it moved.

“Literally trying to charge me $100 or more dollars to unblock my vehicle that was blocked by his vehicle to get out the parking lot,” Thomas added.

Thomas said after he and the guard got into an altercation, the guard shot him as he was returning to his car.

“First he claimed I had a weapon, then he said he didn’t know. Then he said he thought I was going to my vehicle to get a weapon, but he started shooting,” Thomas added. “One of the bullets was like a centimeter from one of my main arteries.”

Thomas filed civil charges in his case, but it’s done little for his recovery.

“Physically, mentally. I don’t know if I’m ever going to recuperate from it, I haven’t got even as much as an apology,” Thomas added.

While no charges have been filed following Saturday’s shooting, the case will be referred to the Hinds County Grand Jury for review.
