An employee at the prosecutor’s office told local reporters three people are dead and one person is injured following a shooting in the building. The employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said two of the people killed were court officers and the other person is the shooter.

“The person had shot two bailiffs, they’re both deceased, and shot a deputy sheriff who is at the hospital right now being treated in an emergency room,” confirmed Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey. A civilian was also transported from the courthouse who is listed in stable condition at the hospital.

A county commissioner told a reporter from South Bend, IN the suspect had ‘grabbed the gun of one of the deputy and killed him’.

Jeanette Leahey, Berrien County Commissioner, is awaiting more information before commenting on the incident but was aware of the situation.

“We’re in a difficult time in the world. We all know that. It’s unfortunate that it’s coming close to home. … I’m discouraged and disgusted.”

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has sent two tweets following the shooting; the first confirming the courthouse had been secured by Michigan State Police and the second asking for prayers.

We will continue to update this story as the investigation uncovers more information when it becomes available.
