Neighbor Confronts Armed Man Violating Restraining Order

A Louisiana man was shot and killed after he violated a restraining order and pointed his gun at a neighbor during a domestic dispute Saturday night.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said a call came in reporting a domestic dispute at a residence on Fox Run Drive in Gonzales around 8 p.m. According to a news release, deputies responding to the call found the couple’s neighbor standing in the yard with a handgun.

The neighbor told police he heard a couple arguing and went outside to see if anyone needed help. As he approached the couple arguing outside the home, the armed man, identified as 43-year-old Nicky Wilkinson, pointed a handgun at the neighbor. That’s when the neighbor drew his own weapon and fired.

The news release also confirmed Wilkinson’s wife filed a restraining order against him in February and that the “restraining order was active and the two were due in court this Friday, August 26.”

Police said no charges will be filed against the neighbor responsible for firing the shot that killed Wilkinson and ended the dispute with his wife that could have possibly lead to her death as well.

We all know a restraining order is just a piece of paper. Above and beyond encouraging women (and men) who are victims of domestic violence to purchase guns for self defense, I implore everyone to take the firearms training courses necessary to ensuring they are practiced and prepared if they would have to draw their weapon in self defense.
