Chicago Alderman Aims to Arm Police With High-Powered Rifles

One Chicago Alderman is aiming to arm officers in the Windy City with rifles after two Chicago officers were shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood last Tuesday. The officers were in plain clothes, wearing vests with badges as they conducted a follow-up investigation on another incident when two vehicles pulled up and began shooting their vehicle with high-powered rifles.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said 18-year-old Angel Gomez was booked on two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. Gomez, who is suspected of driving one of the vehicles the shooters rode in, was arrested Saturday night afterseveral La Raza gang members helped police identify a driver and a shooter.

“Just coming on the scene and seeing what was left of the vehicle that was shot up was heart-wrenching. I’m glad the officers are alright and resting with friends and family,” CPD District 9 Commander Stephen Chung said.

One officer was shot in the arm and hip and the other in the back, both have been released from the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

Claiming Chicago Police have seen an increase in the use of “military-style rifles” in Chicago’s gang war, one alderman says the police force should be armed with high-powered rifles to fight back.

“The police department has to begin thinking outside the box and get these officers certified so we can carry these weapons,” Alderman Ed Burke (14th Ward) said.

The alderman has some support, although limited, for his efforts.

“I’m not looking for one in every car. I am looking for officers who are qualified to carry them to have them as another tool to address crime in our city,” Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President Kevin Graham said.

In other news, police say 10 people were shot, two killed, after suspected gang members opened fire on a group attending a memorial for another man killed earlier Sunday.

And the beat goes on in Chicago…
