San Antonio Police received a report of a shooting in the 6300 block of Aspen Farm around 1:40 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017. The homeowner told police she awoke from a nap when she heard a disturbance at her bedroom window. When the woman realized there was a man breaking into her home, she armed herself with a handgun and shot at the intruder at least two times through the window.

Police arrived on the scene and confirmed the suspect, later identified by authorities as 39-year-old James Carney of New Braunfels, TX, had been shot and was transported to the San Antonio Military Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

But when investigators discovered Carney’s vehicle in the neighborhood, they made a shocking discovery: he had taken his 7-year-old son with him as he committed the crime that ultimately lead to his death.

“We’re gonna get help for him,” SAPD Chief William McManus said of the child, who was immediately taken into custody.

It’s bad enough that anyone would commit a crime, but bringing a young innocent child along for the ride is absolutely unconscionable. Despite his father’s unsavory life choices, I hope this young man will go on to gain positive role models and can make something of his life.
