The National Rifle Association Women’s Programs Committee announced deadlines for Women’s Wildlife Management Conservation Scholarship applications and the nominations for Sybil Luddington Women's Freedom Award and Woman of Achievement Award.
The National Rifle Association’s Women’s Programs Committee is responsible for many of the women-centered elements of the NRA. Aside from hosting fellowship-related events like the Women’s New Energy Brunch and the new dessert party at the Great American Outdoors Show, the Women’s Programs Committee also dispenses awards and other honors. On November 1 the committee has a deadline for two of its prestigious awards as well as a scholarship that it grants to worthy recipients.
Theresa Inacker is an NRA director and member of the Women’s Programs Committee. She enthusiastically spoke about the programs and the looming deadline.
Inacker started her second year on the Board of Directors of the NRA back in April and she’s already been heavily involved as an active and working director. Beyond her extensive involvement on the Women’s Programs Committee, she was also appointed the chair of the bylaws committee earlier this year.
“We just want to get the word out there so that people will apply,” Inacker told Bearing Arms during an interview.
The Women’s Wildlife Management Conservation Scholarship is open to “full-time college sophomores, juniors, or seniors.” This $5,000 scholarship is for women who are current undergraduate students “in a recognized conservation or environmental-related degree program” who have a 3.0 minimum GPA.
The Woman of Achievement Award is given to women who meet at least two criteria on a defined list of requirements. Some of those criteria, Inacker said, include: “performance in competitive shooting, dedication to ethics, conservation, education, performance in a perilous condition, protection of Second Amendment through legislative or legal contributions.”
“Women throughout history have fought to preserve Second Amendment freedoms,” an informational bulletin from NRA said. “From lobbyists to grassroots volunteers, women have been active participants in securing our freedoms. To honor the pioneering spirit and strength of these women, the National Rifle Association will bestow the NRA Woman of Achievement Award.”
The Sybil Ludington Award is a prestigious honor bestowed upon a woman who has gone above and beyond in at least two areas enumerated by the NRA.
“This national award is in honor of the brave woman, Sybil Ludington, who in 1777, galloped on her horse one night to rally troops against the British,” the NRA says on their website. “Now to honor her accomplishment and the accomplishments of modern heroines, the NRA bestows the prestigious Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award in her name.”
NRA Director Janet Nyce serves as the Women’s Programs Committee chair. Nyce said in a statement that the committee is diversified so that it is able to meet the needs of different types of ladies.
“We work with headquarters to keep the website up to date on issues and photos,” Nyce explained. “We work with Clubs and Associations to get the information out to their members for awards and scholarship information. We work with the Outreach committee to further our mission to include all women with interest.”
Over the last several years, the program has been building on that outreach and with help from committee members like Inacker, it is able to get its message pushed further out. Nyce says these members are major players in public relations and rely heavily on social media and their professional contacts.
“I think it connects women to not only the NRA but to NRA Women's (Programs) Committee and interests,” Inacker told Bearing Arms. “I think it's a really great outreach program and to just get women more involved in the NRA as well, and for them to understand that they have a place with us.”
“John, this has been a very exciting committee to be part of,” Nyce said. “As chair, I felt it was important that each member shine in their specialty. So everyone has an assignment and brings it back to (the) committee which then moves things forward. The talent is incredible. We are also truly blessed to have staff person Kelly Farmer as our NRA secretary. She is so one of us! - which means she puts so much effort into our requests.”
The deadlines for all three of these programs are coming up on November 1. The Woman of Achievement Award landing page is not yet complete, but people can email in nominations HERE. Those seeking to apply for the scholarship can do so HERE and nominations for the Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award can be made HERE.
