A jewelry shopkeeper shot and killed an armed robber inside his Newark store Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said a man entered the jewelry store at Central Avenue and South 9th Street at about 3:30 p.m. with a loaded gun and backpack and announced he was robbing the store. The robber ordered the store owner to fill the backpack with money and gold as he threatened to shoot the owner’s family members, authorities said.

The store owner pulled out his own weapon and shot the suspect, the prosecutor’s office said. The unidentified suspect was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No charges were initially filed against the store owner.
