A man in Jackson, Mississippi, woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of someone breaking into his car. In response, the homeowner fired in the direction of the vehicle. The car thief was wounded and later died. Here’s the story:
A Jackson homeowner won’t face any charges for the early morning shooting and killing of a suspect burglarizing his vehicle.
Jackson Police Department spokeswoman Colendula Green said the unidentified homeowner was protected by the state’s castle doctrine law.
“It’s your property and you have the right to protect your property,” Green said.
The castle doctrine allow a person to use deadly force to protect their home, business and vehicle if they are perceived to be in imminent danger.
About 5:55 a.m., JPD was called to the 1700 block of Tanglewood Cove in the Lakeover subdivision in northwest Jackson after a homeowner heard someone breaking into his vehicle and came outside and fired five shots at the vehicle.
When police arrived, Quardious Thomas, 20, was found wounded in the vehicle.
Thomas was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Green said JPD is looking into whether there is a connection between the car break-in where the shooting occurred and other reports of vehicle break-ins in the same neighborhood, including the personal vehicle of Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis.
Lewis said the window was broken out of his vehicle, but he didn’t have anything of value in his vehicle.
