NJ Seeks To Legalize Stun Guns, Tasers Following Lawsuit

For gun folks, there doesn’t tend to be a lot of good news out of New Jersey. Their anti-gun laws are legendary with their bans on hollow point ammunition and may issue permit system among other thing. However, at least the average citizen will be allowed to own and, it seems, carry stun guns in the near future.

From Guns.com:

The pending regulations, published in the New Jersey Register, were submitted by State Police Superintendent Joseph Fuentes with the approval of Attorney General Christopher Porrino and would allow those 18-years of age or older to possess the devices.

Citing a successful lawsuit in federal court brought last year, the proposal notes that “the outright statutory prohibition on sale and possession of stun guns has been declared unconstitutional and can no longer be enforced.”

The rule change allows for stun guns defined as “any weapon or other device that emits an electrical charge or current intended to temporarily or permanently disable a person,” and would allow law enforcement to remove such devices from those under age 18 if encountered.

No, it’s not the greatest news, but it is news that will benefit the good people of New Jersey who wish to take responsibility for their own personal protection. The Garden State is a “may issue” jurisdiction, and at least some of who who get to determine who gets to carry and who doesn’t consider “just because” insufficient grounds to carry a firearm. I suspect “See Second Amendment” would fly just as well in those locales. However, those who are subjected to such draconian regulations now at least have some kind of option.

One can hope that this will be the proverbial camel’s nose under the tent, that it will prove that private citizens in New Jersey can be trusted with weapons without running around zapping things all willy-nilly. With that, perhaps the door can be opened on further pro-gun legislation.

Then again, this is the state closest to New York City with their ridiculously anti-gun laws and the ability to buffalo people into thinking its somehow made their communities safer. It’s unlikely anyone will listen to reason or data that shows citizens with firearms do not make anyone less safe…except criminals. Meanwhile, we already have more than ample data to show that criminals can still get guns. Even CBS has found that.

Still, a guy can dream for a better world on behalf of his fellow Second Amendment supporters, especially those who are in hostile territory.

In the meantime, let’s all be happy that at least they have a few more options for personal defense. I stun gun or a taser beats harsh language most of the time, after all, especially for those who maybe don’t have the psychological wherewithal to pull the trigger on a firearm for whatever reason. That’s a responsibility some people don’t want to live with, and this gives them at least something of an option along those lines.

It might not be much, but it’s a win, and I make it a personal rule to never turn down a win regardless of how small.

What do you think about this?
